 Tour Details

Join Award-winning professional wildlife photographer Aaron Baggenstos to experience and photograph Alaska’s iconic brown bears at close range from eye level.  Our privately chartered vessel will take you into the heart of Alaska’s surreal wilderness where the largest congregation of grizzly bears in the world roam.

Your adventure will begin in Homer, Alaska as you board a small plane for a scenic flight over massive volcanos and stunning mountain peaks.  Destination, the Katmai coast where we will meet our privately chartered vessel.  This mobile platform will be our home for the next several days and gives us the ability to go where the bear are.  Each day we will zodiac to shore allowing us to get eye level to the largest bears on planet earth.

At all times you’ll be lead by an expert bear guide for safe and exciting encounters.  Given the small group size you’ll also receive plenty in the field photographic instruction from Aaron if desired.  Although the focus will be on bears you may also have opportunities to shoot bald eagles, wolves, puffins, sea otters, stellars sea lions, moose, and more!  All against the stunning backdrops of Alaska’s Katmai wilderness at one of the top bear viewing destinations on earth.

2017 Itinerary

*The daily itinerary is flexible due to tides, weather, etc but each day will be focused on bear and wildlife photography.

Day 1:  Arrival day, free shuttle to our hotel near the airport.

Day 2: Aaron will take you on wildlife safari to photograph bald eagles and moose.  Eagles here are very used to human presence and we can commonly walk with in 20 ft of them to shoot head shots.  Moose should have new born calves trailing.  We will also do an exciting 3-4 hour boat trip (weather pending) to photograph puffins, sea otters, and sea birds.

Day 3:  Morning departure (weather pending) as a group for a scenic flight to meet our private vessel over massive volcanos and stunning mountain peaks.  Our boat accommodations are basic but gives us unprecedented access to explore the coast for some of the best bear photography on earth.

Days 4-6:  Full days of bear photography.  This usually means morning and evening zodiac trips to shore to explore on foot, bringing us eye level with bears, eagles, otters, and potentially fox, wolves, moose, and more.  Last year bald eagles nested on a cliff offering a unique overhead shots. We will have a short lunch break each day.  Long days give us plenty of time to explore the Katmai Coast in search of the best photographic opportunities.

Day 7:  Morning of bear photography before departing for Homer on a scenic flight (included) over massive volcanos and stunning mountain peaks.  Time allowing evening photographic presentation.

Day 8:  Late afternoon departures in the afternoon after 3:30pm.

Physical Requirement: Moderate.  This trip requires hiking along the coast on sometimes uneven, wet, and muddy terrain.  Accessing the beach involves a short smaller boat ride to shore that requires a big step down often in intertidal zones and water on uneven surfaces.  We will wear chest waiters to keep you dry.  Each participant should be able to walk up to 2 miles with camera equipment and expect long days in the field.
