Grizzlies of The Great Bear Rainforest

Tour Details

British Columbia is home to an estimated 7,000 to 15,000 grizzly bears, among the highest concentrations in North America.  In Autumn 1000′s of salmon returning to the Atnarko River attract large congregations of these grizzly bears intent on fattening up for the winter.  Our remote, yet luxurious lodge sits on 600 meters of frontage along the river where bears can often be seen from the front porches of our private log cabin chalets or from the private viewing platform.  This stunning accommodation, free from crowds, is the base of your adventure into one of the last vast wildernesses, The Great Bear Rainforest.  From here you will enjoy serene stunning views, gourmet dining, and perhaps a hot tub or massage with a glass of wine to end an epic day of bear photography.

The most exciting way to view and photograph these bears is by McKenzie drift boat.  These comfortable and stable unmotorized boats do not disturb the bears and thus provide a unique bear viewing experience unlike most other commercial bear viewing hotspots.  Each day you will drift, just 2 photographers per boat, with the focus to capture images of these incredible grizzlies as they hunt for salmon.  Because the bears will be well fed they are more tolerant of each other and us thus allowing us extremely close viewing.  On good years guests have seen up to 10-15 grizzlies in a single float although numbers vary.  These drifts will be combined with short hikes along the river to photograph lush green enchanted forests, white capped mountains, bear tracks, mushrooms, and most importantly the bears we encounter along the way.  Join us for this one of a kind, luxury, grizzly bear photo tour free from crowds and off the beaten path.
